Nurse Nightingale Ram sculpture

2022 Part of Derbys very first Ram Trail.

Have ewe seen our Baa-utiful and Baa-rilliant ‘Nurse Nightingale’ out in the wild?

Designed and painted by myself as part of the first 'Derby Ram Trail’. ’Nurse Nightingale’ can now be found by the front entrance of the Royal Hospital Derby, welcoming all to our fabulous hospital.

Our ram was inspired by the fantastic and dedicated work of all the staff and volunteers at UHDB and, of course, she celebrates one of Derbyshire's most famous nurses; Florence Nightingale.

Artist, Elaine Lim Newton said; “The design is also partly inspired by my own mothers passion for her profession as a nurse. She immigrated to the UK from Malaysia in the 1970s to train to become a nurse, and over the course of her 30 years service she made many friends whom she considered her NHS family.”

“A special shout out for the wonderful poetry of Mr Kalwinder Singh; a doctor at Royal Derby Hospital whose poem we have used snippets of for the design.”

'Nurse Nightingale was exhibited alongside a flock of 30 colourful rams as part of Derby's family Ram Trail in the summer of 2022.

this fantastic project was developed and supported by Air Arts , the Derby and Burton Hospital Charity and Derby Museums.

CHWA 2020 Award sculptures.

Sculpture commission for the first CHWA award ceremony.

I was commissioned by The Culture Health and Wellbeing Alliance to create three award sculptures using the CHWA logo and the three award categories as inspiration. An environmentally friendly approach was taken when making the sculptures.

CHWA Awards:

‘Working with our award partners, we aim to showcase good practice and people who are leading the way in creating a culture of care for each other, their communities and the world.’

The results were announced live at a virtual CHWA2020 Awards Gathering, on Friday 20th November, hosted by Lord Howarth of Newport.

Plymouth Music Zone:

“PMZ was over the moon to not only be nominated for, but to win the award this year, particularly given the current challenges. It has also brought us a huge sense of hope for the future and for other arts practitioners.
So the award itself? As you'll see in the unwrapping - it's a very beautiful thing indeed with its wavy, curvaceous shapes - very apt for our ocean city, but perhaps also a bit of a metaphor for how we try to help each other ride the waves along the way? Huge thanks to Elaine Lim-Newton Design for creating this emotive and beautiful award, which will be proudly displayed in the PMZ building for you to see once we can be together in the same space again.”

biome-at-bolsover-castle-2.jpg

Biome

Created for Bolsover Castle Bright Winter Night’s event in collaboration with Junction Arts, 2011.

Biome

Biome is an interactive experience combining sculptural and aural elements that are based on the four sessions. Illuminated organic forms beckon the public to manipulate the constantly evolving soundscape with their position and body movement. Biome was originally created for the 2011 Bolsover Castle Bright Winter Night’s event in collaboration with Junction Arts.

“Biome was a beautiful light and interactive sound installation created by Elaine Lim-Newton, whose ceramic sculptures take inspiration from natural structures including flowers and shells. Working closely with Derby-based musician Beth De Lange and Scrawl – a sound and digital media company created by Matthew Ling and Jeff Burchell – Elaine ran music workshops in schools and residential homes in the Bolsover area to generate the audio element of this artwork.”

Night Bloom

Derby Royal Hospitals Main ICU Courtyard.

2016

Night Bloom

Night Bloom is an installation of ceramic flowers planted in naturalistic waves and clusters that at dusk gently ‘blossom with light’. permanently installed in the main courtyard of the Derby Royal Hospital, the installation transforms a wintry courtyard into a living and evolving space.
During the day the sculptures appear to have grown from the earth, and from dusk they blossom with light creating an effect similar to a ground level constellation of stars.
With Night Bloom i wanted to provide a soothing and calming atmosphere for patients, staff and visitors. Originally exhibited as part of the Derby Royal Hospitals prestigious ‘AIR’ arts for wellbeing program, the installation is now a permanent feature.

“The space is transformed into a magical, private world with the surrounding walls containing the energy and calmness. A contrast is created between this tranquil space and the hurried hospital just one window width away. Once the space has soaked up all the darkness, the fluorescents from within begin to distract and reflect. Viewers squash and cup their faces to take in the magic, creating their own little portal into the world of the blooms. Now nicely settled into their home in the courtyard at the Royal Derby, the collection of creamy white flowers have become a favourite with hospital staff and visitors” Emma Hallam- Hatched Magazine.

The Ceramica Sculpture project
